trying to choose my chicks, can I have a completely mixed flock?

I am trying to pick my chicks for delivery sometime in April. I am definitely getting 2 buff orpingtons, but other than that I cannot decide. I love silver laced wyandottes, but I have read many mixed reviews about their personality. I also can't decide on either a speckled sussex or rhode island red. I live in the city and can therefore only have "5 egg laying birds". I Live in KY, so colder winters and some hot summers. I was thinking I might choose 1 barred rock, 1 silver laced wyandotte, and 1 of either SS or RIR to go along with my BOs. Can I even have such a mixed flock? Please help me choose my chicks and tell me if such a mixed flock would be ok!

With a flock that mixed I wouldn't get a RIR. Their temperaments can vary, but they usually tend toward the agressive side. Sussex, dottes, rocks, and orps typically have calm temperments, but most dottes I've met are pretty flighty. Keep an eye on the rocks. The ones that I've had ruled the roost, but they wern't ruthless.

If you want a calm chicken for sure, get a brahma. Even if they don't like you, they'll still come sit on your lap. They are a bit slow in the egg department, but with looks+friendliness, they're my top 5 for fav breeds.

I love three things:

1. Jesus, my Lord and Saviour

2. My chickens (notably Peep)

And 3. Star wars (!!)

chickens run about so absurdly that it is impossible to count them acturatly!"

I've raised both RIR's and SS. Love them both but for sheer eye candy, I'd go with the SS.
