Went searching for some scrap lumber and..

Made some progress over the weekend. Built the stand and attached the hardware cloth to both sides. I made it longer than the coop, and will use the extra length for a 5gal water bucket and maybe auto feeder. Still mentally engineering that.

It's overbuilt, heavy, and could support an elephant. If I were to do it again I would use lighter lumber.

I plan to add 5/4" boards to the perimeter to provide a "lip" to help keep the coop from sliding off and improve aesthetics.

Haha better safe than sorry regarding building materials :D

Looks great and sturdy, is it longer than the coop/run because you plan on extending the run? If so, you may want to consider lengthening it on the side with no run - it would create a different area/more options for the quail and would look more pleasing esthetic wise with the symmetry :)

Thanks!
Actually, I made it about a foot longer (on the left side) to accommodate one of those 5 gallon bucket gravity watering systems that I've seen all over this forum, and also a PVC auto feeding "tube." I haven't built those yet, but they will be next. I'm trying to get this so that we can leave it for a few days without having to hire someone to come in and feed/water the birds.

More progress yesterday. I finished all of the predator proofing, installed trim board (painted to match) around the perimeter of the stand to keep the coop centered, and installed the home-built watering system. The silicone glue on the junction between pvc and bucket dried overnight so I'll give it a whirl today.

Most importantly-I added 8 girls! They really love it. Surprisingly, they took to the "ladder" within a few hours and now seem to be hanging out in the "outdoor" area. The food is still in the "house" section to lure them back up there-andnto keep it dry.

Congrats on your girls and a great build :D!

Quail live for sand boxes hehe the four hens in my pet group all pile in theirs together for daytime naps :p

Careful in bad weather, is it shielded from rain and wind? Make sure they know where their water is, they may not even know how to drink from it depending on what they're used to?

Good suggestions. Sand box is the next addition! Not sure if they get the watering thing yet, so I also have a bowl in the "upstairs" section. I did a "finger demo" of the little watering nipples and a couple seemed curious to watch drops of water come out. I also caught one bird and tapped his beak gently against a nipple until water came out but he didn't actually drink any. So far I haven't seen a bird drink either from the nipples or the bowl, though the bowl isn't visible so...

Hope they figure that out soon, cause they have me a little worried.
