Cold weather coop

My husband and I are about to build our first coop. We are chicken newbies and will have 5 hens. We live in Kenutcky so warmer summers and colder winters. Every where I read says 4x6 coop would be big enough for 5 birds. I just want to make sure this will be ok for the winter. They will have access to at least 5x10 run, hoping to make this bigger.

I would go as big as you practically can, more room is better. I have never built anything and later wished I would have made it smaller. If you plan on it costing twice as much and taking twice as long you will be close!

I agree....I've never heard anyone ever say they wish they hadn't built such a large coop.

For healthy, well adjusted birds, you'll want to build to maximum space, not minimal needs. I'd look into hoop coop construction, which allows for easy expansion and a cheap and easy build. I built one that I love that's 12x10 for around $300...note, I used as much scrap and free lumber I could, so that price is from using some measure of reclaimed lumber.
 
We live in SW Ohio so our weather is about the same and we have 6 chickens. Our coop is. 8' x 18' (8' x 9' is used by chickens, other 1/2 is storage and our get-out-of-the-weather area when doing chicken chores. They have an 8' x 16' covered run. Honestly I wouldn't add more than 1 or 2 to our size coop & run. If you have the room, I'd suggest going larger. The hens spend more time indoors during the cold weather. Also, a covered run during the wet winters and spring will make life easier for you and the chickens.
