Mites

I'm afraid you can be doing everything right, plenty of space, good diet, etc, and still see feather picking. It has so many causes, it's impossible to find a solution for it.

There is no flock more pampered with space and elegant diet than mine. Yet, I always have a few feather pickers. It's frustrating to say the least.

I've also noticed that feather picking is more intense at certain times of the year, like springtime, and at other times, it almost completely disappears, like during winter. I suspect, therefore, it could be hormone related even more than dietary.

The best you can do is to observe your chickens some afternoon when you have the leisure time, and try to identify the ones who are doing the picking. The first clue will be the ones with the unspoiled plumage. You can try pinless peepers and even a radical device called a "bumpa-bit" which keeps the beak from closing all the way. But there is always the chicken who is able to work around these devices and continue picking feathers.

The only certain solution is culling the culprits. I've entertained the thought, but when it actually gets down to doing it, I can't do it.
