I have a 2 year old Peking duck and he has hurt his right leg. He won't walk much on it unless he has to. It's very swollen and very warm. I can't figure out if it's infected or injury. Here are pics. He is our most lovable duck. I don't want to lose him. Please help.

How long has his leg been like that? If there's no evidence of a break, it looks like it could be a tendon problem at the hock. There's a thread here that discusses treating a slipped tendon: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/873185/duck-leg-swollen-at-hock-help.

A good duck vet is best.

Meanwhile, working to reduce inflammation is good. Lukewarm tub baths, no soap, Epsom salt compresses, T-Relef ointment on the leg, a little turmeric in his food.... chopped leafy greens like lettuce or dandelion or kale or similar.

Might be an infection in the joint - that is where a good duck vet can really help.

Has anyone been chasing him? kids ,dogs in play time. Ducks can hurt their legs from being chased. They can also hurt their legs from jumping off the side of the pool etc.

I agree a Vet would be best and follow Amiga's protocol if one isn't feasible

Rest, rest and more rest. @Quackers40

Thank you for your responses! I can't tell if it's an infection or a slipped tendon. I just noticed the swelling 3 days ago. I called the vet for him to be seen today and they said they don't have an opening. I guess ducks aren't priority

, His appt is tomorrow afternoon. I have been giving him epson salt baths for 3 days now. He loves them, he is very gentle and loves people. Is there anything else I can do for him tonight? Thank you!!!

No kids or dogs have been chasing him but he's very clumsy since he is so big! He's a jumbo pekin male. Oh also I forgot to add that his toe was bleeding near the nail on the same leg, so I am thinking maybe that's how the infection started if that's what it is. Can staph infections be in the leg as well causing it to swell?

It can spread into legs and joints. I hope you'll post what the vets says and I hope the vet can help him..

Soaking in warm epsom salt water[don't let him drink it] can help and it is taking pressure off his leg too. Rest is very important not letting him walk alot right now.
