Walter is a 2.6 bantam cornish - we think he had/has Coryza. Swollen side of face, yellow mucus in nose (smells a bit) eye swollen shut, etc. Vet put him on Baytril injections .3 of the 2.7% solutions for 5-7 days. He was also on Metronidazole for 10 days because we could also see cankers in mouth.

He got better - cankers started to go away - sinus and swelling went down - Walter was looking GOOD. He went back out with others. 3 days later, Walter's nose is full of dirt from digging, his eye was swollen shut this morning and he looks like it's starting to come back or RELAPSE on him.

I don't think vet gave him Baytril either strong enough or for long enough. NOW we are going with the TABLETS because no more shots for Walter (bruising). We have the 22.7mg tabs. He weighs 2lbs-6oz. I have seen everything from 5mg twice a day to 5mg once a day and all other types of dosages on the Baytril site and all over.

Vet said 1/4 tab which is about 5.6mg - ONCE A DAY for Walter. Is this enough? I have read too much Baytril dosing for a while over time (10 days) will cause yeast infection (thrush) and other problems and that it is better to go LOW AND SLOW with it and knock it out.

I am taking culture sample to vet tomorrow but will take 3-5 days - the BAYTRIL worked, but maybe we stopped too early last time or the IM injections weren't strong enough. Going to do Baytril again now while waiting for culture.

NEED HELP FROM OTHERS WHO HAVE DEALT WITH THIS and know dosages for the tablets and what is the best length of time and mg dosage for POULTRY. He is a Bantam 2lbs/6oz.

The most common amount I have seen prescribed by vets seems to be 10 mg/kg *twice* a day. Your boy weighs 1077 grams, so 10 mg/kg twice a day would be 10.77 mg twice a day, or 1/2 tablet twice a day. You can give the liquid Baytril orally. Talk to your vet about why they chose the dose they did.

I asked doctor - he said that was recommended - I think he was looking at the BIRD dosage and NOT the poultry dosage for Enrofloxacin (Baytril).

So I have the 22.7 mg pills - I have been giving him 1/4 (5mg+-) pill every 24 hours (1xday) and he is not getting better OR worse, just same.

I am going to switch to 1/4 tab twice a day which is 10mg every 24 hours ( 2 5mg doses 12 hours apart) and that hopefully will help him start kicking this sinus infection.

I gave him 1/4 at 12:30noon today --- I will give him another dose around 10:30 before bed and then again at 9-10 in the morning and get on a 9am/9pm schedule with him quickly. It's hard to start new routine ....

Do you think giving him his 1/4 a 2-3 hours earlier than 12 hours would hurt - I have to get it on a manageable scale and giving him 1/2 (10mg/per day) is right for him --- he weighed 2.8lbs.....

Right?? Thanks for helping me....

Ok so giving him 5mg or 1/4 of a 22.7 tab every 12 hours is in the "safe zone" and not a high dosage apparently, right?

The vet really freaked me out with the 5mg once a day thing... don't think he knew what he was doing and most don't when it comes to chickens really..... unfortunately.

.... so I'm going to give him another 5mg in the morning at 8am and then start 8am and 8pm and 8am and 8pm for the next 3-5 days.

Just looking for a "yes, you're doing the right thing...". so I feel good about it. Don't want to screw up.

I can only tell you what my vet has had me give, and what I have read about other vets prescribing, and in most cases, it's usually given for 5 days. Your vet has access to the same types of books I have, so I'm sure he has a reason for the dose he chose.

@echix
my vet prescribed enrofloxacin for my australorp with sneezing. She had already had a course of tylan which didn't help, and an extended course of tiamulin which also didn't help. My vet prescribed enrofloxacin 0,2ml at 8am and 0,2ml 8pm to be squirted down her throat for 14 days. It didn't help.

I asked if my australorp could maybe have a fungal infection, as all the antibiotics ever given her have not helped anything. The vet charged me another 63 euros and told me she doesn't think it would be a fungal infection and I should try yet another antibiotic.

I have put her on homeopathic medicine with the aid of a different vet. After 6 months of quarantine and over 200 euros on two different vets who both seemed incapable of helping her, she is still sneezing, but otherwise looks wonderfully healthy. I have treated her for two weeks twice a day with oxine through a nebuliser in case it is a fungal infection, and that has seemed to help her a little, which is more than I can say for the antibiotics, but she is still sneezing. I read up online that if a fungal infection is left untreated for longer periods of time the chickens natural immune system will start to grow a mucus membrane over the fungal spores and then no amount of neblising will help. I am now giving her goldenseal root powder in her food. If it is a fungal infection she is not contagious and we can introduce her to my other birds. But to have a test for a fungal infection I will have to pay 65euros which we just don't have... Hope you and Walter have more luck
