Southern Indiana
Hi all! I'm Jessica. I live in Southern Indiana with my husband and daughter. I work in administration at our local hospital. We live in town, but I grew up on a small farm and have always had chickens. Last year, I got my own chickens for the first time. We chose Silkies for their small size and gentle temperament, as my daughter is only three and we wanted her to be able to help with them. We only have one hen and one roo, but we would love to have a few more hens! I'm excited to meet fellow chicken enthusiasts since my husband doesn't share my love of cluckers.

Here, we can talk about our feathered friends for hours on end without getting weird looks

So please do make yourself at home!

You wont have one hen and one roo for very long, trust me, chicken math is terrible! But who can say no to more chickens, right? Haha, well, your hubby has no clue what he is missing out on!

Best wishes

Thank you, Mustang! I am actually hoping someone here can point me in the right direction to find a few more silkie hens or possibly frizzles! It seems that the wackier looking they are, the more I love them! My husband is a good sport, but he never had any animals growing up and this is all quite different for him! I just tell him that he knew what he was getting into when he married me!

Silkies and Frizzles, never ever can you go wrong with them! Frizzles are fun, Silkies are cute, good mix...

If your wanting to order from a Hatchery, i dont know what state you are in, but i've heard good things from My Pet Chicken and Meyer Hatchery, although i never have ordered from them because they dont ship internationally. Or if you dont like the idea of Hatchery's try craiglist or maybe someone in your area breeds them?

I'm in contact with the local hatchery where we got our Silkies. I'm trying to talk them into selling me a couple of their adult hens! It's hard to find the more unusual varieties here in Southern Indiana, unfortunately. I'm hoping to make some connections here!

Welcome!

I hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun. Unlike non chicken loving friends, family and colleagues, BYC’ers never tire of stories or pictures that feature our feathered and non feathered friends

Some hatchery silkies look like a totally different breed. I would really recommend getting from a reputable breeder. Since you like "exotic" types, check out the "Showgirls "thread. They are a variety of silkie but, not like anything you have seen before. They come in silkie colors and well bred ones are just as likely to go broody often & hatch fertile eggs(where a rooster comes in). Temperament is just the same.

also check out the "silkie thread," for breeders & the BYC Buy,sell, trade forum (need 20 posts to participate).
