Raising Mallards

The thing is that they are wild birds, masters of hiding eggs. How will I know when they start laying? Would a floating covered platform work if I placed it in the center of the pond?
 
Now I see why you wanted an exact date...
I dont know how well this would work, but if I were in this situation, I would watch her all the time, to see if she spent a lot of time in bushes or tall grass or something. Ducks also lay early in the morning, so if you watched then you may see her coming out the nest. Ducks also sometimes get a little bump underneath the tail when they are laying.
