We had a horrible fox attack last night (the one night they didn't go into the coop)
...took 2 of our 3 month old ducks and left the one "lucky" (as we've named her) she has a wound on her chest, and seems pretty Shaken up. We are giving her probiotics and electrolytes in her water, which she hasn't drunken yet. She hasn't touched her food (very rare in her case). She has a heating pad, is in a warm dry place, and we've cleaned her wound. We had a chicken die of an infected wound and I'm worried I'm not doing a good job caring for this girl (or boy) anything else I can do? :barnie

I am so sorry for your losses. Clean the wound real good you might want to let her soak in some nice warm water so she cleans herself. Then part feathers and make sure there are not other wounds. You can clip the feathers back so you can treat the wound better. Rinsing in saline warm water can help and what are you using on the wound? How deep is the wound? If you decide to let her soak stay right with her . I am sure she is shaken up and shocky.

We can't leave it up to our ducks/poultry to go inside and lock their own door. We have to take that responsibility of making sure they are locked up at night so we don't have to see carnage like you saw this morning. This fox and all kinds of other preds are just waiting for an opportunity like the fox had last night.

thanks for the response! We have given her a bath, today and yesterday. The wound is about a centimeter deep, maybe even less. The ducks and chickens usually go into the coop, but decided to stay out. The coop is inside a run, which is fenced in by an electric fence so this was a VERY determined fox, we think they flew through a gap but this one managed to get back through. We did try our best to clean the wound, and ill use the saline solution. Again thanks for the response, we are fairly knew to ducks but have had chickens for 5 years.

I forgot to mention we are using vetericene (I believe that's how it's spelled) anti infection spray on the wound,

I'm sorry for your loss!

Hope she/he keeps on going uphill from here, and I agree with @Amiga that ducks love duck friends

Good luck, and

Glad she has started to drink a little - yes, I expect shock, agree with advice given above.

Storey's Guide recommends clipping the feathers around the wound a bit so you can see what you are dealing with and clean and medicate more easily.

Be on the lookout for oral antibiotics that you might want to use in case infection sets in.

That is great news. Another thing that will help her is to bring in some new ducks once she is healed.  They do love to flock.

Yes! This lady or a man (not quite sure yet) is a Muscovy, and we were planning on doing some breeding, we are planning on adding more chickens and more ducklings later this spring!
