Daryl the emu has been internally pipped for 39 hours now. I've read that it can take 24-48 hrs to externally pip for a ratite. He's still moving and scratching around in his shell. He peeps occasionally (never did peep a whole lot). It is now day 54. I work from 3-9 tonight (probably will get home around 930). 9 pm is the 48 hour Mark. Do I wait? Do I make a small air hole now? I cannot lose this guy! I'm so attached at this point. I'm having a hard time finding info on what to do at this point. I have also read that emu males have been observed helping their chicks out of their shells? I reweighed him and for his gestation date he's only about 2g overweight. My humidity is a little high at 42% but I'm having trouble getting it down. What do I do?

Update:
At 48.5 hrs after internal pip:

Here's where we're at now.

I did not intervene. I'm really glad I didn't. I can't wait until he's totally out!

I feel bad that nobody responded to your plea for help. I know nothing about emus, but I like to look at the pictures of them on this site.

I'm so glad little Daryl made it! :D Congratulations!

From my experience, that is pretty normal.

Similar to a human baby, you MUST see them poop after a few days.

Fascinating about their biology is they hatch with a fair amount of the yolk still inside them, that keep them going and get started.

Daryl pooped twice today. he also drank some water. Still doing great! he even stood up straight for a few seconds and took a few steps! I'm in love!
