LGD-where to kennel/sleep?

Thank you so much! I expect we will have some set backs, but I think with the right help we will get through them all.

Huck si doing GREAT! He is like an old man, just really laid back, less puppy, more serious. He is still playful, but not what I would expect from a 4 month old pup. He went with my kids t the woods this morning to walk the trail, then escorted them back, promptly walked around the yard checking things out, and laid down next to the largest group of chickens free ranging. He's a really good boy!

Hopefully we can get Anne trained well; not sure if it is just because she is so young that she is just all puppy right now? =/

That sounds so good to hear about Huck! I love it that he seems set on working, even at this young age. That bodes well for his future, I'd say. That he's staying with the flock is just wonderful! Could be you'll see him take the lead and even correct your female if she gets too playful later on.

How's he doing on food training so far?

He is doing great with food training. He is SO laid back with the kids and me. Very calm, like and old man. Super mellow.

I feel like I am seriously a bad luck charm with female dogs though. Anne went back to the breeder because she had a genetic issue w her jaw and teeth (narrow jaw and bottom teeth causing holes in top of mouth which I didn't notice before). I lost $100 on her, (was given partial refund) plus her shots and stuff. Ugh.

Looks like we will be getting a great pyr from someone else in Missouri.

Question- Huck still isn't barking ... at anything. Should I let my house dog out with him a little more? She barks at cranes on the pond, people coming down the drive, etc. Huck was barking when he saw the cats, but I guess he is used to them now and no longer does that.
But he doesn't bark at anyone coming down the drive, hawks, noises, etc.
he is even a little shy of me and my husband at times.

How can I build his confidence? Should I bark to show him? When he hears the house dog bark, he definitely pays attention.

I have to jump in and say thank you for this thread!
I have my first LGD (Anitolian/GP) 10wks old and at the moment its hard because we are between houses.
I have learned a lot from bith of you and hope everything is going well!
We are working on leash training now and I tell you she will pull and sit down and not want to move :/

The pull and sitting down, not moving was classics for huck as well. He didn't start cooperating at all until I did the treats. Once I started giving treats for each little thing he did good (even if it was, I had to say sit, while he was sitting haha) he started trusting and opening up. Does well on a leash now. =)

I am glad this has helped you! It has definitely helped me! =P haha I have MUCH to learn.

AND- good luck with your pup! Feel free to ask questions here, I can tell you what I've done so far for things. But of course, I think BeeKissed will be most helpful. =)

Sadly most peoples experience with LGD is related to goats and sheep and in all honesty that is what they are bred for, no poultry. However if done correct and raised correct they are priceless. I have raised and bred LGD for over a decade specifically for poultry use since thats what I am is a hobby chicken farm. I have owned goats and sheep and everything else over the years but in the end Im a poultry farm and thats what my dogs are used for. How they are raised and the types of temperament you need are just very different for poultry protection vs sheep/goats etc...I butt heads ALOT with people on this but there are very few that use their LGD for just birds so I think I know what Im doing after over 10 years and Im happy to chat with anyone and pass on what I have learned over the years to make a very effective poultry LGD. Unlike most breeders I will give advice and opinions to anyone, not just people that buy dogs from me. I can chat dogs for hours lol.

Hi! I have a question about LGD’s and poultry. We’re getting a 12 week old maremma/Great Pyrenees next week. I’ve looked and haven’t been able to find info on what to do when the LGD is a puppy and there’s predators. We have quite a number of coyotes and foxes in our area and often hear the coyotes quite close at night. We’re getting chickens at the same time as the puppy and I’m wondering for a puppy, how are they protected from the predators? Where should she sleep and how do we make sure she’s safe while she’s still small? How is she expected to protect the chickens and also be protected herself? Any advice is greatly appreciated!
