Chicken manure in the garden bed

Hello! New gardener and chicken owner here. This is our first winter with our hens. It has snowed significantly but the birds are doing fine; we shovel them a path to encourage them to get out into the yard after a snowfall. My husband attempted a cold frame over our existing garden box that wasn't able to get enough sun/retain enough heat to keep plants alive this winter. But the birds really love it, since it is covered so it stays dry in there, so he just opens it for them during the day and they basically hang in there all day.

But....what effect will all their poop have on the soil in there come spring? I pointed out that he is also basically training them to destroy the garden...but we do put fencing around it when we plant. Anyway, will it just be good for the soil, or will it be too much/not enough time processed?

It will be good fertilizer for your soil. You do not mention how many chickens you have and the size of ground that the fertilizer is being applied to . I am only guessing that you have a few chickens and the area is a small garden. Everything should be fine. Work the soil in the spring before planting, and the fertilizer should not be too potent to burn your plants. If you overdid by concentrating quantities of chicken droppings directly under your plant sets, than you might experience plant burning. Experience will make you a better gardener very soon. I do spread my chicken droppings over the ground in my flower garden areas. I just drop on surface, and let rain work it down into soil at natural pace/rate. My flowers grow magnificently well. I do add some Miracle grow during the summer to keep those blooms coming. Chickens free ranging during summer do not go into my garden as much as the lawn. Many peeps that have larger numbers of chickens, prefer to add the chicken waste to their compost piles. This makes a very stable and non burning alternative fertilizer for sure. The composting action remover the harshness.
