Its been raining here for weeks. Floods are everywhere. This is maybe why Ive seen an uptick of fling insects. Im really worried. I use DE in all my soil and coop- I clean daily where they hang out- and I clean the coop weekly - I have lots of chickens so that means lots of poop. Im noticing now for the first time ever these weird little flying bugs with white wings. I am organic and need help . I looked up white flies but I don't think thats what they are - can anyone help me with a solution. They are everywhere - so weird. I can't use the DE in the rain so Im stumped!

Hello again! If your coop is tall enough perhaps you could try the old fashioned sticky fly papers? You would have to ensure the chickens can't get to them though - I can't imagine what that would look like!!

Here is a semi organic approach. Well it does not use any chemicals so maybe it qualifies. Get a large box fan and cover the intake side with window screen mesh. Turn it on near the source of flies. The flies should be getting stuck to the screen and not able to fly away. Take a brush and finish little buggers off. Return in a while and repeat. DE only works on the creepy crawlers that come in contact with it. No affect on aerial ones.
WISHING YOU BEST.

I had a lot of flys n my coop and if one of them got injured I didn't want Flystrike so I put a few of sticky fly strips and the next morning I got out and Harriet had it stuck to her tail :gig :lau.

Welcome to BYC!

Probably nothing to worry about as I doubt they are detrimental to the chickens.
Just a 'bloom' of insects from the moisture, will probably die off within a few days.
DE is not going to kill insects that are flying.... when it works, it works on the larval stage of insect life.

The fan is the best suggestion....fly strips, up high so chicken can'tg et at them, might help.
Point the fan up towards the fly strips.

Ok- I bought some sticky fly thing , actually two- sure enough - Houdini our Leghorn had one stuck to her butt so bad I didn't think she could pop out and egg- and now this morning one of the olive eggers. Certainly a site but also - my tiny fly population ertainky has increased - they look white when they fly off it the bodies are black. Ugh!

But what a site it was! Two hens two different days - each had the yellow sticky fly paper stuck to their butts running around the yard- a site to be seen. I wish I had my camera.
