Poultry Dust Confusion

I Sprinkled some Poultry dust - Permethrin*: 0.25% - in my coop and nesting box - THEN I read the label and it clearly states do not use in bedding or nesting boxes. SO why is it OK to use directly on the bird but not in their litter? I assume it has to do with them kicking it up in the coop or nesting box and then breathing it?!?

She had bugs several months ago - I put some in the coop then and it seemed to take care of the problem - she does dust herself and doesn't seem to have a problem now - but I did some work in the chicken yard over the weekend and applied a little to both places as a preventative. BTW - I only have one bird...... I plan to get 2-3 more in a couple of weeks!

Thanks for any insight.....

Hey there ChickEchick

What Brand is it please?

I also find it bizarre that it can be applied to the bird but not the nest box.

Here in Aus, I use Pestene which is Sulfur and Rotenone based. The directions on it include liberal applications to bedding and environment.

I think that the nest box issue is to keep permethrin off the eggs as much as possible. Some rules don't seem to make a lot of sense! I use permethrin under the feed bags that line the bottom of the nest boxes, and feel fine about that. Mary

Keeping the Dust off the eggs makes sense then...... So the Coop is probably OK just not the nesting box......
