So my Black Runner hen, Jasper, was with my main flock, but as the drake didn't like her, and she prefers to be with the magpies I put her in the Magpies breeding pen with them. A little while later she was in the house making a mumble quack without opening her beak and making a nest, she was adding hay, and moving around, once in awhile she gave some loud quacks. She then went out in the "run" ate a bit, got a drink, and went right back to the house and did the same thing. I went back in and a little while later I went out. She was sitting on her nest starting at me, not moving or making noises at all. After a few minute the Magpie hen went to the door of the house, and started eating (the feeder is right by the house entrance) Then Jasper got up and got a bite and some sips. I went back in while she was drinking. What is with her? Of all the duck hens I have had none have done this. I have never had a hen be all picky about their nest like this. ?????

Well she's not on her nest right now, she's sitting by the water. hmm... who knows about broodies... @Miss Lydia

Don't broodies stay on their nest 24/7 except once or twice a day to eat and drink? That's what I've heard... But for some reason none of the ducks I've ever had have gone broody.

Not till it hits the full time. Sounds like your Runner is practicing for the big day. Are there eggs in the nest? Has she laid eggs yet? She maybe getting ready to lay also.
I found a mystery egg in the pen she was in this morning. It might have been hers. I doesn't look like the Anconas or Campbells. It's kind of skinny and light brown. I put in storage (I start incubating tomorrow) to see if anything hatches. There are not any eggs in the nest, which is reasonable if the egg from this morning was hers. The mystery egg (if it's hers) would be her first of the year.

I believe I'd crack this one open to see if fertile before putting in the bator. If her first egg may not even be fertile.

So I cracked it open but while I was looking at it the yolk "bled".

But before that happen I saw something that looked like it was a fertily bullseye. So if she is going broody, about when will she get serious?
