Yes, good fun! Unfortunately the closest thing to grass we have is shrubs & tinny little cacti. Both of which are covered in pine needles down to the roots. But we have plenty of light soil.Three day olds having a blast picking thru a pile of soil, grass, weeds, etc. Little foragers in training! If you want to see your little chicks be chickens, give 'em a sizable pile of good earthy soil, with grass, weeds, and hopefully some bugs. They love it. This is just their starter brooder, and I've made their pile bigger since this picture. I'm going to make a big heaping pile of earth, etc. in their bigger brooder that they'll be moving into in a couple of days. It's like the difference between your kids being penned up inside with nothing to do, or being able to play outside in the dirt. Make 'em happy, give them some earth to explore. And as Joel Salatin would say, you'll get to see the chickenness of your chicks!
Hey you do what you can do, right? Anything to stimulate their natural foraging instincts is great.Unfortunately the closest thing to grass we have is shrubs & tinny little cacti. Both of which are covered in pine needles down to the roots. But we have plenty of light soil.
