first time chicken farming

I love how chicken math got you already and your 6 chicks turned into 10! They are darling little fluffy golden babies!

A general rule of thumb is that however old chicks are in weeks, is the height they can fly in feet. So 1 week old they can fly a foot high, two weeks old two feet high, etc. I mention this because if you don't have some sort of screen for the top of your brooder, you'll want to get one before you end up with a rogue chick in your house (I know that from experience...)

I think the pasty butt is pretty common at first because they have been through a lot of changes in their short lives, getting mass transported to the store and then going to their new home. Some people add apple cider vinegar to their water to help with that, 1 teaspoon per quart of water.

Hi Everyone!

Thank you all for the help on raising chickens! For those of you that helped me out, I have something to show you. This is a video I found on YouTube. As funny as it is, It helped me with learning about how to raise chickens. I think you guys will like it. It is called The Chicken Of Tomorrow.

Pasty butt is a big problem in tiny babies first week or two. Take them gently in your hand and with a cotton ball wash their rear ends until all is clean...warm water should do it pretty well...very important to keep an eye on that...

you should have seen me with my chicks over the kitchen sink, dabbing their little behinds...but I didn't lose one....and their behinds are even cuter now...

that video is hilarious

thank you

and fermented feed at this point would be a good idea to help with pasty butt...

they will need more space very soon is what i found out...like within a week...I wound up brooding them in a bathtub....
