Pullet or Cockerel???

You can actually see some shiny baby saddle feathers, and the iridescent tail feathers. It's actually quite apparent!
I you can't have a roo for whatever reason, you might want to find him a home soon. Otherwise, congrats on your little Roo!

when he was smaller, he was the one who took the little one under his wing. would cockerels do that? also, he is nice and likes to be held... he walks up to you. I thought roosters were more mean. she looks like a rooster but acts like a hen.the other chicks like to follow her but r ok without her... thanks!

Yes. I've had many roosters and cockerels and none were aggressive. Most aren't mean. Hens like to follow the male around; that's good and normal. He sounds like a nice cockerel.

He's not a rooster, yet. He's a baby. All my young chicks like to snuggle with each other, regardless of gender.

Young cockerels are often perceived by humans as the most "friendly" birds. But, what humans see as friendliness is really the bird being quite assertive. There's a reason most chicks are leery of humans, they're little prey animals and know they're vulnerable. A young bird walking up to a large human is actually very bold, not friendly.

If you intend to keep him, I'd start respect training now. He's male livestock, not a pet. Treat him as such. Enforce respect by having him yield to you when you're out and about. Walk toward him and make him move away from you. You don't need to chase him or anything like that, and he won't be afraid of you. He'll respect you, and that will be a good thing when he's 10lbs and has inch long spurs and thinks you're messing with his favorite hen.

Ihave these two 5 wk old chicks. They are curious and seem to dominate the other babes. I think they are a few days older but they are much bigger. Are they hens?? Is it too early to tell?

My best guess would be that they are both cockerels but not 100% sure on the first one
