Best goose breeds and a couple of questions

I've raised Sebastopols for over 10 years and have never had one come after me. The males will fight with each other but never came at me. Before I got into Sebastopols I had a mixed flock of geese of about every breed just running together, roughly 80 total. And some would come up to me and want petted and some would stand off a just watch me and some were aggressive and you had to watch them. Its more of an individual thing rather than a breed thing. It depends on how they are raised and they're general personality. I've had some that were just sweethearts and some were born nasty.

Almost all breeds can fly and you'll have to clip wings or have a covered pen to keep them where you want them.

A kiddie pool works great as they are easy to clean. Which you'll be doing nearly everyday to keep clean water for them.

For beginners I would recommend one of the smaller more manageable breeds like Utility Toulouse, Pilgrims, or Shetlands. Some of the larger breeds can be intimidating for beginners. If you have close neighbors I'd avoid Chinese as well, they tend to be VERY loud. But are also one of the smaller breeds and lay very good so they may also be a good option.

If you just get one it will very likely bond with one of your ducks. They won't breed but just hangout together for company. I would recommend getting a pair. And setting up a pen just for them. Geese don't typically like sharing space, water, or feed with other types of poultry. And possibly will keep others from the feed and out of the coop if they claim it as theirs. Geese can be very territorial of certain spaced that they claim as their own. Such as nesting areas, shaded resting areas, and their pool.

I meant to mention that you probably will have lets aggression problems and enjoy your geese better if they do not have a mate to defend. My 3 Chinesesplit up and my accidental gander hangs with my ducks and is pretty much still himself. The other two barely come when called and act up frequently.Accident gandee still eats out my hand and is the leats scared of me.

Glad to help. Also something to think about is that geese can be a long term commitment. They can easily live into their twenties.
