Favorite 2 year old hen (buff orp) is ailing & I suspect sour crop, but I've never dealt with it.... I gently pressed on her crop this morning & a bunch of fluid shot out of her mouth...... Seemed her crop was full in the AM... What does their breath smell like? Is there a treatment? Just notice her not eating yesterday AM....

Sometimes they get hay stuck in there and it can get impacted ! Does she have access to grit? She may need help to get her crop empty! You will need to gently massage it till you are sure it is empty.

She has access to grit & I use pine shavings for bedding. I went back this AM & massaged her crop until it felt empty. I checked on her this evening & I'm not sure she'll make the night.

Is the crop empty now? If so, try to encourage her to drink - get liquids into her, don't worry too much about food - dehydration comes quickly.

If you can, bring her in so you can monitor her.

Update: Just checked on my sick girl & it appears she's doing much better.......... Keep your fingers crossed!

Update: Well shoot..... She seemed much better yesterday, but I found her sick in the coop this AM... she had more fluid running out of her mouth as before,,,,,, Her crop felt empty, but I did massage some fluid from it.... I don't smell an odor on her breath.... I may be on the wrong track here......

I'm sorry she is declining.

When was the last time she laid an egg?
You may want to take a fecal sample to your vet for testing of cocci, worms or bacterial infection. Sometimes an underlying cause can create a sluggish system of blockage - this can go hand-in-hand with crop issues.

Thanks Wyorp Rock! I'll take a fecal sample in....... FWIW (once again) she was out with the rest of the girls this AM helping eat their BOSS treat (strange)....... Whatever the problem, she seems to temporarily benefit from me massaging her crop.....
