Alright, so my two silkies were out free-ranging and I noticed my white rooster Sugar (who just started crowing!) was limping. I picked him up and looked at his foot, and there appears to be a small injury on his middle toe.

It looks like the top layer of his skin was scraped off somehow. The underneath layer that is now exposed is skin, not flesh, and it's not bleeding, just soft and tender. It almost looks like shedding snakeskin.

I wouldn't be concerned, except that he does have a pronounced limp and therefore must be in a bit of pain. Any suggestions on medical treatment? Should I just let it heal on its own?


 
Soak his foot in some epsom salts or betadine to help reduce inflammation and gently clean the wound.

Dry the foot well, then apply some triple antibiotic ointment or Vetericyn to the wound.

You may want to wrap the foot and place him on clean dry bedding for a couple of days. If you have a kennel that you can place in the coop or run so he can stay with the flock that would be a good idea.

Watch for signs of infection like pus, oozing, redness or odors.

Thanks! I used your suggestions (though I didn't wrap his foot) and it seems to have helped. He's healing well and the limp is gone, he doesn't seem to notice it anymore.
