Standard Rex x NZ?

My husband and I would like to raise some meat rabbits and I'm trying to figure out what breed to get. I'd like to get nice pelts too. I know it would take a few generations to get a rex pelt and NZ type growth but I was looking at this cross as a possibility. I'd do a standard rex buck and 2 NZ does.

Oh, and my question was....I'm sure this has been done before and I was hoping for some imput.

My question is, why would you want to do this? Perhaps you know something about the Rex that I don't; I have never bred standard Rex (I don't currently know anyone who breeds them, either - well, there is one person on Backyard Herds). I have, however, bred the Mini Rex, and that coat is luscious, so I can understand why you'd want it. But if you read the breed standard for the Rex, everything about it says "meat rabbit," there are even more points for body than there are for fur. A good Rex coat isn't just short, it has a certain structure and amazing density. These are qualities that could get lost in an out cross, and it might take several generations to get them back, which puts you in the position of possibly having to house multiple animals with kinda-sorta coats while they grow out (baby coats are never as springy and dense as the adult coats) to decide who should contribute to the next generation.

The adult size for the Rex is slightly smaller than the NZ, so it would take a little bit longer to get one to slaughter weight, but the coat that makes the Rex worthwhile isn't the one it is born with, so if you want pelts, you have to wait anyway.

I also don't breed standard Rex, but I do breed NZ, American Chinchilla, and Silver Fox. If you're looking for a fast-growing meat rabbit with an amazing pelt, you might want to consider the Silver Fox (so named for its pelt's similarity to the Silver Fox's). The Silver Fox is prized for its high dress-out percentage - the Livestock Conservancy states that "it was the first large breed produced that dressed out at 65% of its live weight" (https://livestockconservancy.org/index.php/heritage/internal/silver-fox).

I know this is a really old post but I breed standard Rex... at about 90 days mine reach about 5 lb and dressed out at about 3 lb I'm perfectly fine with that as far as the Pelt there is nothing that compares to the original.... I would just stick with the original and go with it you don't need a New Zealand in the mix you can definitely breed them separately for meat.
