Hello, I'm Tim and I'm new to byc's. I've wanted to get some for years, just never pulled the trigger.

Last month, I decided to get some for my son (and me) for his 6th birthday. The previous few months, we had been hitting the local feed / stock shops and he's been playing with the chicks and constantly asking for some. Then, after a few serendipitous events that gave the green light, I found / bought 2 Black Australorps and 2 Speckled Sussex (exactly what I had been looking for), all about 16 weeks old (at the time).

We've had em for about 5 weeks now, and they've been a blast. I created this account because I had a question about integrating new (older) chickens into the flock. From what I've read (which is predominately about younger chicks into older flocks), I assume the process is the same (quarantine, segregate, etc), but I just wanted to get some feedback on it.

Thanks.

! Happy you joined our community! Yes, I would agree that integrating older chickens into your existing flock should involve quarantining and the integration methods you've read about on BYC!! If you'd like to do more research, you can find some great articles in this link: https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/maintaining-a-healthy-flock
And here's a great link about integrating chickens: https://www.backyardchickens.com/newsearch?search=see+but+don't+touch
Best wishes and thanks for joining BYC!

Welcome!

As you have already received some good links and advice, I will just wish you, your son and the flock all the best.

I hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun. Unlike non chicken loving friends, family and colleagues, BYC’ers never tire of stories or pictures that feature our feathered and non feathered friends
