Rabbit frustration

Well the white one had another kit during the night. Is it normal for a first litter to only have 2 kits?

Hi there - I raise Silver Foxes, American Chinchilla, NZ, and crosses. My NZs have had litters as large as 11, but I think that in general, a smaller litter is better because it means less competition to nurse and improved survival rates. In my experience, 7-8 seems to be a number that most does can successfully raise. I try to have two does kindle at around the same time so I can foster kits to another doe, if needed (and that has saved a couple of kits' lives).

There are a number of things that may have caused your doe to only kindle 2 kits: she may only have conceived two, some may have been resorbed, or it's even possible that she hasn't given birth to all of them yet. First litters are typically where mishaps occur, like stillbirths or miscarriages, and I don't get too concerned if the first litter doesn't go like clockwork; the doe will usually have a much better kindling experience the next time.

Congratulations on your new kits!

Well the chinchilla didnt kindle. I bred her back to the buck 3 times yesterday and twice this morning. Someone told me they are harder to knock up. I guess ill breed her until she starts fighting the buck....idk

Lost a kit last night. It was in the 30s last night and it was with the new mother. But the rest look fat and happy

Well better be careful with the dosage---to much and the rabbit might break out and make some easter eggs with the hens/chickens!!

Let's hope not..!

I finally got her to kindle. She had a litter of 2. One died.

Shes due again end of next week. We will see how it goes. The others all had big litters last time. If she disappoints again ill dress her out with the friers
