Self-cleaning Duck Pond?

Hello!

I am looking into making a small pond or swimming hole for my ducks but I don't want to replace the water daily. Not that it's a hassle but I do not want to be wasting so much water. Does anyone know of a system for a self cleaning pond. Anything from a horse trough to a legitimate pond works for me. I'm looking for a possible system without electricity to keep the water clean.
 
I'm curious too. I'm sure there is a duck to water ratio of some sort that allows balance due to the waste/ammonia that's bound to accumulate over time.
 
For no electricity, you'd need a real pond.
Otherwise you are going to have a pond of nastiness in no time.


I have a 7x11 pond that I built, but it has a filter and that's what keeps it usable for a year or more between cleanings.
 
^ That is what I was thinking. I think having the plants, microbes, soil, etc is essential to keep waste build up down if you don't have electricity for a filter or other cleaning system.
 
I have a question is there a duck to gallon ratio ? what plants would you use I have a 300 gal stock tank a metal one.my ducks can dirty a pool in 30 min. after I cleaned it. that is a kiddie pool .

there were 12 ducks in the pool that day . since then I got rid of some. that is the 300 gal stock tank. thanks.
 
Hmm that's what I thought. I wonder if I could get a big tank (like the one above) and hook it up to my gutters somehow. That way it would refill after every rainstorm. Algae would be the only issue at that point. Not that the ducks mind.

How many ducks do you have using that pond?
 
I use a 2x1x6 galvanized goat water trough. I use irrigation water which I pay a one time fee each season, so I can drain it often. This also means that they only get "the Pond" during those months. Please also note that standing water is a breeding ground for mosquitoes, and depending where you live increases risk of west nile and zika. In the winter I use 15 gallon rubber round trough and a couple of rubber buckets for drinking water. In my first year with ducks had grand ideas of ponds...but the filtration issue and cost ruled it out. If you find a DIY hack post it.
