Hi everyone,

One of my runners keeps having little episodes. She acts as though she is trying to flap her wings, but flaps them individually and really slowly/jerky. Then she will act as though she is worn out and lay sown with her wings out (see pic)

As soon as she has done it she is back to normal. So far i have only seen her do it twice. i am wondering if any ones ducks have shown behaviour like this before? Or am i better getting her straight to the vets?
Thanks for any info/advice you can share.
Tom

I wonder if she is having some kind of seizure? I think if you can get her to a vet that might be the way to go. @Tominski

She might also be having problems with an egg, I've seen struggling ducks use their wings for balance. Is she pooping normal? If not, she might be egg bound. I don't know your experience level so I don't know if you can rule it out. She might also be poisoned / drunk and be looking for stabilization with her wings (I saw a duck on youtube that ate a mushroom and got stoned and flopped around for several hours - fortunately it was alright afterward). If you can't identify the source though, I would definitely take it to the vet.

Thanks for the responses, I believe it's unlikely to be poisoning as they have been stuck indoors since Christmas because of the bird flu outbreak. I will see if the vet can see her today, better safe than sorry. I had three eggs this morning, but some of the girls are camera shy so its hard to tell who has laid them, but i will investigate further!

Nice looking eggs there. Vet is always a good idea if feasible, vets we aren't . Please let us know what you find out and hope it's nothing serious.

@Miss Lydia have been to the vets, they believe it is neurological, possibly epilepsy or a calcium deficiency. They gave her an internal examination and she is not egg bound and otherwise in good health. I will have to take her for a blood test at a specialist vet next week. Hopefully they will be able to give us a diagnosis.
Will keep you updated.
P.s she was very well behaved on her little trip. Can you get a special carrier for duck? We had her in the cat carrier, but she was hunched over as she refused to sit down.
Many thanks,
Tom

Not that I know of some just use a clothes basket to transport them in I have had several size dogs over the years so I just use a dog carries in size appropriate. Or possibly one of those cardboard carriers that kitty's get transported in they usually have them at the vets office they have holes already in the sides and a handle. put a towel in the bottom or pee pads for puppies.

I hope it's some fixable like the calcium def. Do you feed them layer or put out any other form of calcium like oyster shell? Also calcium citrate[human] can be given to them. Hoping for the best for your lil one and she sounds very precious. We had a member back last year that got s diagnosis on her duck of Epilepsy and started it on meds last we heard it was doing fine. I doubt I could find the thread though but you might type in either of these in the search at top of page and come up with info.

Please keep us posted on how she is doing. and very happy to hear she isn't egg bound too.

Thanks for update @Tominski
