Any idea what kind of chickens I hatched? The eggs were given to me from a lady with big brown layers. I got 2 of the solid brown color, and 3 with the stripes

What does the rooster look like? My guess is that the big brown layers are mixed breeds, maybe hybrid red sex links, and the rooster is something different so you wound up with what we call mutts. They are not any specific breed, just chickens. The rooster has an influence on the chick’s genetics and laying ability so it would help to know what he is, but if those hens are good egg layers any pullets you get probably will be too. And the odds are pretty good you will be able to tell the individual chickens apart by feathers when they grow up. It should make a pretty flock.

I know she has an ameraucana rooster, and a rir rooster and hens. Then she bought full grown hens she said were rir but I am thinking they probably aren't. The eggs came from her brown chickens. It would be super cool if these were mixed :)

It’s highly probable her “Ameraucana” is really an Easter Egger. If she got him from a hatchery that’s almost certainly true. Easter Eggers are normally mixed breeds to start with. That means you can get a variety of colors and patterns from his chicks. Some of the pullets might even lay green of blue eggs.

It’s possible those really are RIR’s, rooster and hens, maybe hatchery quality. If you scroll down all the way to the bottom of this link you can see what RIR chicks should look like.

Red is about the weakest of colors genetically. A lot of other colors and patterns will often show up when crossed with red. I don’t know what her “Ameraucana” rooster looks like, but I’d guess the chicks that look like RIR chicks probably have that RIR for a father. The others are probably from the Ameraucana.

That link is great! Thank you! I think you might be right that the 2 solid ones came from the RIR roo and the others might be mixes! So cute!
Her ameraucana is definitely an ameraucana, she got her roo and hens from me when I let my broody hen hatch 2 years ago. Mine came from a breeder not a hatchery :) I get the prettiest eggs!

I'm excited I might have some egg color variety before too long! As long as these aren't all boys lol, which is usually my luck!

I'm excited I will have some variety to my egg color before long! Unless all these are boys, which is usually my luck haha

They all have single combs and yellow skin. No Ameraucana in them. Looks like a few of them may have had a red sexlink mother.

I was actually thinking that, most likely the full grown hens she bought weren't actually RIR, and probably a sex link. And the striped ones probably came from them and the RIR rooster. I have no idea how mixed breeds work so didn't know if the comb and skin color from the ameraucana would be guaranteed to pass down
