HELP! Showgirl chicks keep dying

@Pyxis sadly things have gotten worse, really, really thought the chicks looked better last night but had 4 more deaths today. i've just been sick over this and have been contacting different vets trying to find somewhere to take the bodies and the remaining living chicks...

I'm sorry :hugs

I don't think it was the ride home that did it. It wouldn't have been good for them at the time, but lots of chicks are shipped across the country at less than a day old and spend three days in a box with no heat, food, or water and they still make it.

I do hope you can find someone to do the necropsies. See if Cornell will take them, I bet they would.

@Pyxis I'm trying to get my state agriculture rep out asap since he was going to be coming out soon to test my other flock for my npip, hoping to get him out today or tomorrow if possible, just waiting to hear back. i'll look into cornell as well, pretty sure I now have a place to do the necropsies at least, I'd really like someone to come out and check the remaining chicks and my setup to rule anything else out

I wish I could help, but I do not know this breed. We are a compassionate group here on BYC, no need to fear hostility.
 Best,
 Karen

that's right ! A 250 heat bulb is way too much for that small glass tank! Good Pyrix! Do you have thermometers in the both brooders? They should be at the level of the chick's backs. Even better is a hygrometer to measure both temp and humidity. Walmart sells a cheap one.

Just my 2 cents: I use the point-and-squeeze laser type thermometer. It's so easy & we used them for our reptiles in the past. So if the temp should be 95 on day 2 (as an example/ don't recall the temps post hatch), easy to aim in the area where the chicks would stand & adjust the light height. Of course, we always want the shade. To be honest, I love the Heatplate for this... chicks just move toward or away, so much easier (no more melted bins). I also agree with y'all -- I do not recommend the aquarium. A Rubbermaid bin (for example) is safer as it doesn't hold so much heat and is still so easy to clean. Aquariums were perfect for our reptiles to maintain heat.
