My chicks won't be in the coop until April, Ive heard sand is a great flooring for runs. I recently saw play sand at the store that was different colors (for use in kids outdoor sandbox). Could I use this sand for my run? My kids and I love the idea of having colored sand for the coop. Is there anyone who has heard of colored play being harmful? I would never want to harm my birds,

Welcome to BYC!

Never heard of colored play sand...googled and it looks like pretty small packages,
would be expensive to buy enough for a run.
Have no idea if it would be harmful to chickens, don't think I'd want mine eating any of it tho.

Sand is not a great run bedding long term tho, IMO, it ends up saturated with pulverized poops and then really stinks when it gets wet. Unless you live in the desert, I'd avoid it.

Play sand (colored or not) is not recommended because it it too fine and uniform in texture.

Sand doesn't work well in all circumstances. I'd go with regular construction sand to find out if it suits your circumstances.

Thanks for the input! I was just curious, I saw a woman who had square hole in the ground with colored sand in it for her chickens . For dusting I suppose? But I've decided on a different flooring. Thanks so much!:)
