Elector PSP

I just used it. My girls stopped laying after molting. My breeder said that 95% of the time that is due to lice. I tried PSP Elector about 2 weeks ago. I got 4 eggs today for the first time in months...

I just wanted to reply because I think your breeder may have given you some incorrect information. The molt is usually triggered by low daylight hours - the chickens grow in new feathers to keep them warm over the winter. Then, the lower daylight hours also mean they stop laying eggs. Hens usually lay only when they are getting enough light each day. They naturally take a break from laying in the months with shorter days. They might lay right through their first year, but the second year they molt and then usually take a break until spring until the days lengthen again.

Your hens are probably starting to lay again now thanks to the lengthening days; likely them starting laying two weeks after treatment is just due to the timing. If they have lice you can see them. The lice lay eggs around the base of the feathers around their heads, necks, and vents, which are easily visible upon examination, and you can see the lice themselves too, often in these same areas.

If the lack of eggs was the only thing that happened and you didn't actually see lice or their eggs, they probably didn't actually have them.

Of course I might be wrong and there might be more info that you didn't post, like that you did see the lice or that you keep them under artificial lighting, in which case, I apologize for telling you what you probably already know :)

Pyxis,

I appreciate the information. I am giving them extra light. They get about 14 hours each day.

The amount of daylight hasn't really changed much in the last 2 weeks.

I looked for lice around their vents and other places. I did not see any. But I didn;t really look that hard or know what I was looking for.
