Could this hurt my chickens? Molded Hay??

I let some of my silkies out to do some bug cleaning up and to get some sun today because it has been fairly warm here today.

They was some old hay sitting on the side I saw them scratching at and Eating. I went and checked out the hay and sure enough the hay is molded. Will this hurt them? I am very worried!
 
I would remove the molded hay. Mine have had access to molded hay in the past and did not get sick, I think they dig for bugs and sprouted seeds. But I rather be safe and remove it, when I find it.
 
Penicillin...natural antibiotic.

Just kidding.

I wouldn't worry about it... they could have a little runny poo. Watch them, I think they'll be fine.
 
Actually, it could possibly cause sour crop issues, the mold. Had a couple get their heads through the fencing around my huge compost pile of shavings. They got into a pocket of moldy feed in there and one hen died, though a second one did recover.
 
I think it is different when they are scratching in hay or compost, while they have the ability to run around. I have noticed my chickens will eat stuff, when they are caged and don't have access to the big smorgasboard in the field, that they wouldn't eat when they are out and about. So I watch what I let them get into in the chicken yard, but I don't worry so much when it is in the field, because they seem to be more discerning about what they eat then.
 
I know what you mean I even have some roosters who eat plastic. None of them have died from it but I always keep an eye on them. They have picked alot of the insulation(Plastic) I have up around their runs to keep out rain and drafts..LOL Silly Roosters!
 
If they are grown chickens, i think they handle it better. I had a young one die from feed that spilled over from the feeder and got a little moldy. So even if yours are older and are ok.....i just wanted to share what happened to my little one so you would know it can be harmful to younger ones. I hope everyone is ok
