Breed

"best" is subjective -best in pure number of eggs? Or are you looking for best consistent production of a particular size of egg? The best bird for solid production in a given climate (if so, what type of climate)? Most efficient feed to egg conversion?

There are several breeds that would come in just under the named breeds for pure number of eggs - barred rock, Sussex, Australorp, Rhode Island Red, Delaware, etc. However, there are other factors that would go into whether they would be producing at their best in a particular environment that might make one breed "better" producers in a given flock.

Hi,
Leghorns are laying champs.Marans lay well too. I once owned clean legged Marans of English descent. Great layers. Even in snowstorm. Plus they do well in damp conditions, being originally a swamp chicken. I do not like the feather legged Marans. The feathers get too dirty in the poultry yard. Ok if you are going to pasture your birds, tho. Best Regards, Karen in USA.
