We went and picked this sweetheart up on a whim for our bourbon red Tom so he has another lady. The fact that she is laying was a big incentive since I want to hatch some out to butcher for thanksgiving dinner. Problem is my Tom thinks she is a male. She has a slight beard and I've actually had to move her from the intro pen into my largest chicken run because of him attacking the sides and terrifying her. Is this normal and is there any way I can make them get along? I also have no clue on the breed, was told she's a white turkey. She's very docile and very large.

She looks to be a broadbreasted white. Stand by to find out how hard/easy she would be to breed. Her swollen feet make me think she needs to go on a diet though, but I don't know that for sure. She will definitely need a restricted diet though.

That's what I was suspecting, but I'm very new to turkeys. She does waddle, is there a safe way to put her on a diet? I have been feeding her adult game feed with scratch until today.she had laying crumble with scratch grains.

Yep, she is a Broad Breasted White. If you put her on a diet, about a pound or little less of feed once a day, you'll get many years out of her. I'd recommend putting the tom with her just for a little bit every few days. So that he can breed her then take him out of her pen.

Thank you, I was worried she wouldn't live long if she was a bb white. I'll try them again in a few days. He just seems so bent on attacking her that I was scared to put them together.

I had one sometime back. I was given her because the people who had her couldn't butcher her. So I took her with the intention of butchering. But she was so sweet and ya know she gave me an egg every other day year round, sometimes I'd get an egg everyday for a while. So I kept her, and I had her for 3 or 4 years. She sadly died one day last year. Somehow she got up on a feed barrel and fell off and broke her back. So I had to put her down.

Sad story but also a nice one. She got to live a good life.

That's a horrible thing to have happened, I'm sorry you lost her that way. She lived a good long life with you and your story gives me hope that our girl could do the same. I'm going to reduce her grains and allow her to free range forage and see if that helps her weight. Thank you for sharing.

Ya I miss her. She would follow me around all the time. And if she was bad, like getting into the feed bucket. I would scold her and push her out of the way. And I kid you not she would go pout off away from me and then come right up to my leg and rub her head on my leg. As if to say, "I sorry, I was bad".

Find ways to keep her active like hiding treats or feeding her on the opposite end from her house "weather permitting ofcourse". Also you have to watch so she doesn't overheat in the summer. I kept a box fan running in the barn and mine loved to set in front of it on the hot days.

The heat didn't even dawn on me.I'll definitely add a fan, her coop is next to my shed so that'll be easy. I let her roam today and she followed me around for a good hour. Then this evening I had her following the kids for nibbles of apple. She amazes me how gentle she is, almost attention starved. I'm thinking of letting her roam on her own tomorrow, see if we can't get her motivated. Yours sounds just like mine, she gets this embarrassed look if I have to move her.
