Funny egg laying behavior

When I clean the poop boards in the morning and refill the feeder I usually lock out the chickens but sometimes a hen is sitting on a nest and so I do my chores while she gets ready to lay her egg.
Now twice I have seen a hen (different ones) get up from the nest without laying her egg. One of them even gave her egg song, but there was no egg. The other just got up and out...
Is that common? I was so surprised. Usually they stand up a bit and then a hear a little clink and there's the new egg. But not for those two...
Also, I have found an egg in the middle of the coop floor twice in this last week. I thought maybe they were layed on the run while they were jockeying for position to get out into the run in the morning when I open the door, maybe? They always hear me get their water ready and rake the litter and make a lot of noise clamoring to get out and eat their morning treat. Or could they just be laying them from the roost? Or toss it out of the nest?

It's not unusual for a hen to leave the nest before making her deposit if there is something more exciting to do. And yes, sometimes in the rush to the new and exciting, an egg can get dropped while on the run. This most often happens with new layers. They will have an egg fall out, b/c they are not yet familiar with the new things their bodies are doing.

What lazy gardener said. I have a beautiful Fayoumi who is allllways on the go. She'll go into the coop singing her song (absolutely the loudest "egg incoming" singer in my flock, incidentally) and then jet right back outside, sometimes still singing. The other day, she ran into the coop to lay, then I heard her jump onto a roost, and then I heard a splat and she ran right back out.

She's a nut. And not a very conscientious layer.

Edit: my pup benefits from her lack of laying finesse. I scrape any broken eggs she lays from the roost out to him. At least someone comes out happy.

If mine think there's food to be had, they'll absolutely rush out of the nest box to snack, and then go back and go back to laying once they're done. Occasionally, if there was a "queue" for the nest box the bird that was in the box will lose her spot in front of the line and end up having to wait for another to finish, poor silly things.
