Hi Everyone! We are starting to keep chickens this year. I am a teacher and have hatched chickens for years but this is the first time I am keeping chicks. I have done a TON of research, been learning a bunch from BYC, and have read multiple books. I hatched chicks 6 weeks ago and have loved every minute of experiencing them growing! I have another batch in the incubator set to hatch on Monday! We were able to get all the breeds we wanted to keep, so we are very excited! Its awesome that I can share this with my class and my own children as well. We decided to go with a coop from TSC for now and we will design and build are own after we have had our chickens for a while and know what we want. My husband has already modified the coop some to do more of what we want. He added PVC feeders, a coop door to the hen house, and is working on making a watering system. We built the coop in our garage so the chicks had more room to grow and can stay warm enough since we have a woodstove in there. So happy to be on our chicken adventure! I have to figure out how to get my roos to a forever home that will want them to keep and not eat. If anyone has any ideas, please let me know!

Hello, one of the teachers in the school I worked at hatched ducks and I got to keep a few of them for my kids when they were small . I was so fascinated by watching them each day until they hatched. I bet the kids are having a great time watching your chicks and waiting on the new arrivals to get here.

Glad you decided to join us!

It sounds like your chicken adventures are off to a good start! Rehoming roosters can be a real challenge, especially when you hatch a lot. Maybe you could advertise them here on BYC on either your state thread or the animals in need of rehoming section.

The kids love watching it all! I also have 4 kids of my own at home. They love the chickens and spend hours with them each day! I hatched ducks one year at work and that was awesome! How many ducks did you keep? Do you still raise ducks now, or are you just keeping chickens now?

We kept 2. Had to have one for each of the kids. At that time my kids were living with us and we were renting my parents home I grew up in. The property was much larger then what I own now. they are in there mid 30's now and I am almost going on 60. So I am talking many years ago.. OMG I just made my self sound so old. hahaha. Just raising chickens now. As well as 2 dogs. I have MS so my son lives with me since I lost my husband in 2014.

Welcome!

BYC has a Buy, Sell & Trade Forum but you need to have at least 20 posts before you can participate: https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/67/buy-sell-trade

You might want to also pop in and say hello on your local thread: https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/26/where-am-i-where-are-you ‘Find your State’s thread.

I hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

If you would like to share pictures and stories of your flock, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out
