Everything is framed and ready for siding and roofing - thank the Lord because my girls will be ready to move out in about a week.

My local Home Depot carries two products for siding.

This one is $20 per panel and comes with a 1 year warranty. http://www.homedepot.com/p/48-in-x-96-in-Textured-Redwood-Grain-Fiber-Panel-Siding-29055/202190402

The coop is elevated, so there's no real ground contact. I only need 6 panels - so, it's a $72 price swing. I generally lean better safe than sorry and would go the more expensive product. Any suggestions here on which one? All in - the coop and run is running me about $1,000. Being towards the tail end of purchasing items, I'm looking to save money where I can - but don't want to be foolish either. Thanks!

I got the Smartside for my second coop. I was only using one sheet of it so the cost was not too bad. It is good - thick, heavy and durable. My local home depot doesn't carry that other stuff (DARN! because I am building coop 3 this weekend and got so excited when I clicked your link) so I can't comment on it from personal experience. Looking at the reviews some people do complain that its not as stiff and its a bit fragile, but of course you always have to take reviews with a grain of salt.
 
I used the Smartside for my coop. Going on 7yrs, and it has held up great. No problems with it at all. Man, the price has gone up big time on it though. When I bought it, it was $18 a sheet. And, if I remember right, it has a 50 yr warranty. When working with it, don't slam it around on the corners, it's easy damaged/crunched. Once it's in place, it's a very durable and tough product. I don't know about the other product, though I read the reviews, and a guy had a complaint about the stuff bowing, after he installed it. And he had to add additional framing. That would be a pain. The Smartside does not bow. My coop has it's framing on 24" centers, and none of the panels have bowed at all.
 
The look about the same. I used the cheap stuff 8 years ago on a shed. It's still great shape. The key is paint . Check it out every few years and repaint if needed. I moved but they still have not repainted it.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm only building this thing once and will likely go with the more expensive product...need to cut out some doors and would like to simply use the cut outs...hoping the more expensive product cuts nicer. Will report back if there are any issues...
 
Hey y'all, sorry to revive this thread but my question seems applicable.

With the LP SmartSide, do you need to have a plywood backer?
The LP siding is only 1/3" thick and will be serving as an interior and exterior wall without a plywood backer. I'd think even a 1/3" sheet of plywood would be better than none but if it's not needed then I'll save my money.

I don't know what Home Depot called my siding but it was $45 a panel! Here's an early build photo showing the siding. In the long run I think it was worth the expense. It was thick and primed.

Interesting. For now due to expense mine will be exterior plywood painted with good exterior paint at least 2 coats with 1x2's for accent and to seal any seams. The roof will be plywood with metal roofing. Figure if in the future I want to add siding I can.
