Hi

what types of hatch rates should get you expect when buying eggs mail order? and what else hinders there development?

Hi there,
Hatch rates depend on a lot of reasons;
1. How many eggs are fertile
2. How old the eggs are
3. Temperature in the incubator
4. How rough they are handled in the mail and how well they are packed.

But if eggs to get shipped and packed well you will usually
Still get lower hatch rates
But let's just say the seller is getting 85% hatch rates,
Then you will probably get around 70-75% sometimes you can,
Get higher though,

I think it will depend a lot on the seller. I've bought eggs 4 times from ebay sellers and had pretty good luck for shipped eggs. between 70-75 % this last time I got Texas A&Ms and had 115 of 138 hatch for 83%.

I was going to order Texas A&M eggs from Louisiana to ship to Washington but I decided to get chicks locally instead (the seller does not sell hatching eggs) because I did not know how well the eggs would travel so far. I hope to have my own hatching eggs soon but I would like to bring in new blood to avoid inbreeding brothers to sisters. Mine were hatched 3/7 so there is time.
 
I've always had lousy hatch rates on shipped duck, chicken and guinea eggs, so I found Texas A&M quail eggs locally for my first hatch.

I did however order 2 dozen standard coturnix from Stromberg's. I was not at all optimistic about the Stromberg's eggs, and absolutely positive I would have a good hatch rate on the local eggs. (The local eggs were collected specifically for me, for hatching, and they were all less than 7 days old.)

I was completely wrong. I had a decent hatch rate on the local eggs, just under 60%. But I had 80% hatch rate on the shipped eggs from Stromberg's! I was stunned!

Out of the 44 eggs I set only three were infertile, but I don't know which ones since they were mixed together by that point.

So I guess the moral of my story is... you never know! And don't count your quail before they hatch!

its strange I had 3 out of 4 hatch from my own buttons, but ones I have ordered online have not been to good, I have some chicken eggs stuck in the delivery depot which I will have to pick up I am hoping I have a good time with these in the brinsea, unfortunately it is closed until tomorrow morning now :(
