Large poop/ Bloody poop - 4week old chicks

Thread Starter

Hello,

I'm a new 1st time mom to eight 4week old chickens ( 2 Black Australorps, 2 Barred Rocks, 2 Rhode Island Reds, and 2 Golden Laced Wyandotte). I have two issues, and would appreciate any and all advice.

First poop issue, one of my reds has been having an issues where her poop is too big for her bottom. She will cry and peck her bottom when the poop gets stuck from its size. If I hear her having this issue I pick her up and help gently squeeze the poop from her bottom for her. I have started to add a yogurt and apple sauce crumble mix option for them to eat a long side their normal medicated crumbles. (This was started in hopes of adding moisture to their diet to help her poop soften.) They also have probiotic water and chic grit. Her large poop issue started at about 3weeks and has been continuing for about a week now (I've had chicks since about 2weeks old and first week no big poop issues). Not sure if this normal and something she might grow out of? Or if anyone has ideas how to help her?

Second issue Is today while they where having some floor and treat time (small amount of bread, yogurt, apple sauce and crumbles mix) I noticed one poop was runny/solid and had some blood in it (see pictures). I did not see which chick did the poop :( sadly. I don't know if this could be related to the chick having too big poops or not. This is the first time I have seen any type of bloody poop and I clean their brooder daily and they have floor time once to twice a day so I see quite a bit of their poop. Not at all sure is this could be normal. Please help, this blood poop scared me and I would like to know what to do for my little girls.

Greetings from Kansas, TAG82, and :welcome!  Pleased you joined our community but sorry you are having chicken poop issues.  Here are a couple links that may assist you.  The first is the aptly named but still ghastly Poop Chart.  You may cross reference the images with what you are seeing with your bird:  http://chat.allotment-garden.org/index.php?topic=17568.0

On the too large poop, is it too large or is there a dried up poop blockage (pasty butt)?

You also might post in the Emergencies Forum here:  http://www.backyardchickens.com/f/10/emergencies-diseases-injuries-and-cures

Someone there may have some advice for you.

Or the Baby Chicks Forum here:  http://www.backyardchickens.com/f/11/raising-baby-chicks

Hope you find some solutions!  Best wishes and thanks for joining BYC!!  :weee

Sorry, I am not an expert on what ails chickens but it could be Coccidiosis.  The ER Forum redsoxs gave you a link to is your best bet.

Best wishes to you and your little ones.
