Duck poo right outside the door everyday!!! How do I deter them?

My brother in law lives with us and has 3 ducks that free range and take care of themselves outside. Every single night they lay right outside the door and poop everywhere!! We even switched which door we use and so they switched too! Every morning I get a pile of poo on my shoes. Are there humans ways to deter these ducks from sleeping and poking right outside the door? Thank you!!

Porch light is just about always off. Maybe they see light through the window? Any ideas of how to shine light elsewhere?

Our neighbor has a single strand of christmas lights that hang above the chicken & duck coops for lighting & her ducks haven't been on her porch since she hung them. She has a timer on the lights so they come on before dark & shut off after she "puts everyone to bed" & they are safely closed in their coops.

We have a smaller fenced off section for our ducks, but occasionally we let them forage the whole yard. Well our first born, Bill (the mallard) will sit on our back steps and look in the window at us ❤️ Now the other two runners (Dirty and Dusty) will follow him and they'll create a huge mess in an hour or two. So we used some left over hardware cloth and fashioned them to some homemade posts to create a barrier.

**side note: Regular chicken wire and/or garden netting would suffice for this purpose. The hardware cloth can be annoying to work with sometimes.

Christmas lights is a good idea! I have some sitting in my trunk! They are completely on their own, no coops, no pools, just free range ducks on the property. Can you tell me what kind of places they prefer to sleep? They lay under some bushes nested in some dirt most the day, but I have no idea what kind of place they like to sleep. I'll hang the lights anywhere they will reach, as long as they aren't right in front of the door or on my car. Their two favorite places!

A dog house will work.

They seem to like to sleep for the night by the door you all use. They will likely continue that.

I would ask your BIL to build them a house and lock them up at night.

Haha That's a pretty tall order! He isn't very helpful with these sort of things. But we will see what we can do! I will at least ask! It is calving season, so he claims to be pretty busy, even with his two hour lunch breaks and sleeping in till 10am. Gotta love em! ;)
