Hello! I have been battling pasty butt with my Buff Orpington, I have cleaning poo off her but about 3 times now, it hasn't been severe at all, and i also applied some olive oil to the area and she is doing much better! I am just confused as to why only one of my chicks would have pasty butt? Could she just be bad at regulating her body temperature and is getting too warm?

I also forgot to mention that he chirp is very faint and hoarse sounding. She is eating, drinking, and running around normally just as the other chicks are though! Is it maybe just the way she sounds? Or maybe the breed?

Yep, I do have plenty of space for them to cool off! Maybe her bum is too fluffy! She is very short and stocky so that may be the problem. The poo isn't around her vent it is mostly a few centimetres away from it:/ This is a picture of her

I have that same issue on one of my Silkies. We got these three about 2 weeks ago and this one has to be cleaned every day or so. Luckily no blockage yet so I don't think it is a major issue as long as we clean it.

We have a 5 week old group of six chicks and had a few that needed to be cleaned once or twice but all are fine now.

Hi,

I had the same problem. One of my 10 chicks had a pasty butt that I was constantly attending. I just put a little bit of coconut oil on her bum, but I don't know about olive oil! Anyway, when I got all ten of them, they were all about 2 days old, so once the one who had a pasty butt was about a week old it stopped. She was one of the really fluffy and short ones, so being fluffy probably has to do with it. I bet if your chicks are pretty young it should resolve soon. I think that once they start losing their fluff and growing their feathers it will stop. Good luck!

Thank you all for your info! She hasn't had a problem since I put the olive oil on! So I guess it is just because she's fluffy hahah!

I had this issue with one of my barred rocks, she too was a tiny little thing. Cleaned it a few times and no more issues after that, she is as big as the other barred rock that I have now ad doing well :) glad to hear yours is all better!
