The last thread i saw regarding the Belgian Malines (Mechels) was from 2013. Does anyone know of their status in the U.S.? I would love to get these on my gentleman's farm (i dislike the term homestead) for the meat. I currently have RIR and Barred Rocks for eggs. But I have been looking for a GREAT meat bird. Looks like Dorkings and Favorelles are my second choices but i would prefer the Mechels. Any information would be appreciated.

If you will search Malines at the top of the page, there have been several mentions of the breed in the past several weeks.

Among the big breeders, this breed has fallen out of favour, making them hard to come by. When they are raised indoors in cages, their plump shape and massive size, not to mention tall, slender legs make them more apt to injuries to their feet and legs. Now many have dropped these in favour of the Bressels, a white, bred for meat bird. That being said, they are the nicest, sweetest backyard chickens...built just perfect for exploring and foraging in a natural environment. Our roosters never start squabbles and settle everything among more wild types.
