We are going to try our hand at backyard chickens, we live in a neighborhood so limited to six. We have three Rhode Island Reds that are six weeks old, my husband built them a tractor coop. Everything seems to be going well except at bedtime.... it's to hot to have the heat lamp on in the garage so I've been trying to turn the lights off. They get so upset and I'm afraid they are going to hurt themselves. So now I've been leaving a "night light on". Any suggestions on how to wean them off a light at bedtime?

I should add that they when I've gone in to help them settle down they will as long as I hold them but as soon as I try to put them back and leave they throw a fit. Just crying I could ignore but they are flying into the door and knocking their feeder/water over, I'm afraid they are going to get hurt.

:welcome :woot :cd :frow :yiipchick Welcome To BYC From ME, Becca!!!

Hmm, This happens to me all the time, but they usually wean of by six weeks.....

Try leaving a flash light and then try to wean them off completely.

Sorry if I'm not helping much :/ I'm not sure what else to do  :idunno

I don't see any harm in leaving them a night light. When they get a little older (and by then it stays light longer) try doing "lights out" again.

BTW, I love Rhode Island Reds...they have a lot of personality and lay very well!

Thanks!
We are really enjoying them and I love their different personalities! They are super friendly and curious.

I may leave the night light on till they move into their coop full time, I bet there is a lot more light in the backyard then in the garage (it does have windows)

You could also try a light on a timer. It could be set to go on at dusk and off in an hour or so, giving them time to roost and fall asleep.

Welcome!

I hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

If you would like to share pictures and stories of your flock, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out

I was just thinking I'd share a pic of them since they are so stinking cute but all my chicken pics include kids. Haha

I'm going to search but I thought I read somewhere on here that they fed their chicks boiled eggs, could I just give them boiled yolks?

Hello, and welcome to our wonderful forum! I am so glad you joined Backyard Chickens, I hope you will make yourself at home here and enjoy it as much as I have! :frow
