Is there something I can use instead of grit?

Depending on what part of the country you live in, many soils have plenty of grit in them. Dirt is what I sweep up off my kitchen floor. Soil is the good stuff found outside that makes things grow and makes chickens happy, and often has grit (insoluble stones with rough edges) in it.
 
Far too small for a chicken. That grit is probably almost like sand as it's sized for canaries and finches.

You can literally buy a bag of plain small gravel (check a home improvement store, garden section usually - just make sure nothing's been done to treat it other than it being washed) that's roughly the size of peas or corn kernels, and that is hen sized grit.
