Integrating at one week old (with mother)

Quote: </p I just checked the protein and it was 15%. Is that 3% enough to make them attack the chicks? I forgot to mention this earlier but the one that attacked a chick had recently been broody and by them time we got a box to break her in she had broken herself but i did notice that while she was sitting in the nesting box her combs colour started to fade and it went a bit floppy (its back to normal now) and it just looked like she wasnt the healthiest. could that be another factor?

QUOTE] You will need to get a higher protein feed...18%......The lack of colour in the comb happens to Broody Hens.....That is normal.....If Chickens do not get enough protein behavioural problems happen...Either aggression or picking.....Also if feeding scratch and scraps daily? Will dilute the balance of the feed...Free range birds also lack in protein if foraging all day long..... I am glad your Chicks and Hen are doing good now...:) Cheers!

Cheers!
I feed my chickens all the food scraps we get so i doesn't go to waste but they usually dont eat any of it until the after since they are free ranging all day but they do get some of the chicks food that they kick out of the brooder, in fact they spend about 60% of their day there now.

It does sound nutritional....You have Hybrid layers that require a better balance to their diet...Sorry, but it is the truth...Cut back on the hours free ranging and all the scraps....:)

Cheers!

Quote: You are most likely in your peak free range period in Australia, yes? They will be finding lots of natural protein on that free range. I'd allow them to continue to free range, but, as CR suggests, give them a high protein feed. It makes sense that your broken broody would be the aggressor, as her body is depleted of nutrient stores, and she's in survival mode, looking to make up the deficit any way she can. This is one reason why it's not a good idea to allow a hen to stay broody unless she is actually hatching eggs. You might also consider fermenting your feed. It builds their gut flora, and breaks down the antinutrients in the grains, making them easier to adjust. There's a FAQ article below my signature.

I tried putting them in together again today and aside from being stepped on the only time one got pecked at was when he attempted to challenge one of the isa browns.
