Incubating Peafowl Eggs...

How old are peacocks before they mature and are laying?

An IB hen may lay a few eggs at two years of age, they are kind of hit and miss as to being fertile. They are not very good at the mechanics the first breeding year. At three years of age IB's will start production and will lay around 25 and maybe more the next year. Greens on the other hand are about a year later than IB's. A two year cock if he has a few eyes will be mature enough to breed but we never put more than two hens with a young guy like that.

Wow. That's interesting. I didn't realize they took so long to mature. I have a friend that is interested and has been looking for a couple years to add some, but it's not easy up here to find them. I told her I'd be willing to incubate for her, but I've never looked into the long term business of owning them.

My family takes regular jaunts to Abilene just to eat there, not far actually. Just give us a heads up and we will work out a visit for you.

Maybe we'll plan on making a trip that way in early June after we get our first cutting of alfalfa done. I'll keep in touch and thank you!

What is best way to raise humidity when you don’t know what humidity is? I have two eggs almost ready. Day 26. But incubator is small inexpensive model. Did I keep water in bottom as usual and maybe add wet cotton balls? I have cheese cloth to lay on bottom of incubator. Is that necessary?
