Disappointed in Hatching eggs I bought, should I or shouldn't I

Hello All. I recently purchased 25 eggs (she gave me 7 extra) from a local breeder. I have bought from her before a couple years ago and need some advice. Once I brought them home I candled them before putting them in the incubator and noticed 6 were porous and 5 were odd shaped. I candled them today (day 7) and only 6 are developing. I cracked a few open and they don’t look fertile. My question is whether or not I should let the breeder know and tell her I’m a little disappointed. I did buy them for $60, which I feel is not cheap, and I’m a little disappointed with the quality. Am I wrong for saying something or is it ok? Also I’m using a Brinsea Octagon for the incubator and I have had very good hatches with it. Any Advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

It never hurts to mention (nicely) to the seller what your experiences are. A good breeder will appreciate the feedback. Many will try to right a situation. So I would say, don't expect replacements, but mention your findings and she might be willing to work something out.

I am totally new at this, so keep that in mind, first was there any sort of guarantee on the eggs? If not in my opinion you have two options 1) with no expectation of a refund or replacement eggs, explain the situation to her just like you did above, giving her valuable feedback on one of her products that she may not be aware of and allow her to respond as she sees fit. 2) look at it like you bought 6 eggs for $10 each (I hope they hatch for you!) and enjoy your birds , keeping the quality of these eggs in mind the next time you want to buy eggs. Best of luck to you.

6 out of 25 unshipped is definitely not acceptable!

I would kindly let them know as others have stated. As a breeder, I definitely would want to know. Though I suspect anyone serious about breeding would have candled eggs for themselves and seen how porous they are. But without knowing the right questions to ask in the beginning like what their own personal hatch rate is or how they verified fertility, can make it difficult. But you might be able to still ask those questions. And doing so in a non accusatory way will always net a more positive result even if it isn't the one you like, you will feel better for it.

How often she collect and how long she save them before sending out to hatch? As well as are they stored correctly during collection? So many variable. Since you have been satisfied before maybe it's a fluke. But things can change drastically in flocks over time including health and condition and age.

Hope you are enjoying BYC so far and good luck on the rest of your hatch!

Thank you! I think I will write an email and just let her know what is going on.

That's such a great way to look at it. There is one particular breed I am excited to hatch and she gave me 12 of those eggs but only two show delevopment. I'm hoping they hatch and both are girls. Thanks again for the advice.

I have bought shipped eggs before and was shocked when 19 out of 23 hatched so I assumed having local eggs would produce even better results. I didn't even think to check the eggs when I picked them up because I have had good results with other eggs from her. I will definately ask more questions next time. Is it better to email her sooner or later? I know some people don't suggest candling until day 10 but I thought day 7 was a good indication.

Day 7 is probably plenty to me. Especially since you have previous experience hatching and kinda know what you are looking for and previous good results.

But you could always give a heads up with an update at day 10.

Do you even want more eggs if they are offered or will it make for a real inconvenience when it comes to added hatching and integration time? Are you hoping for a certain outcome? Or just want to move forward but let them know as a courtesy? Were they advertising the eggs or did you initiate contact?

I vote sooner... better to get it over with and not have to keep thinking about it!

I vote sooner as well. Recommended candling is 7/14/18. And while for new hatchers not removing clears until day 10 is a good idea, once you've been hatching, you know what is viable by day 7.

If I was offered replacement, I would definitely accept it. The breeder advertises on her website and Craigslist for rare hatching eggs. When I purchased the eggs, I was hoping to hatch 10 of the 25 eggs. I ordered three different breeds but she gave me extras of another breed. The extra breed is doing well but the breeds I actually wanted are not doing well. Only 4 eggs out of 22 are developing and I would like to try again if the option is offered. I'm nervous emailing her and trying to figure out the nicest way to say I'm disappointed in the eggs.
