Hello everyone. I have a Rhode Island Red hen thats been limping for about a week now. I've checked her for bumblefoot and any sores or anything but found nothing. A soak in some epsom salt seemed to help a great deal - for almost a day she seemed to walk just fine. Then she was limping again. Shes in good spirits and gets around okay.. but when i went to check her out today i noticed this on her right foot-

My first thought was that it was bumblefoot but there's no black scab on the bottom of her foot. It didnt seem to hurt her while I was examining it. Anyone know what this could be?? Thanks for any help

That looks like she has a scaly leg mite infection. Search for scaly leg mites and you will find lots of treatment options, and treatment for the coop. You should check all your birds legs to see if more have it too. I usually soak and scrub their feet and legs in warm soapy water with a soft toothbrush GENTLY, to clean and loosen it up. then slather the feet and legs in castor oil, work in with the soft brush. Then slather petroleum jelly over that, all to suffocate the mites. You will have to re-treat at least once a week, for several weeks. And using a permethrin spray in the coop will help. The mites can hide in every nook and cranny available, especially on and around roosts. If your roosts are wood, consider painting them, which seals them and makes it harder for the mites to hide. It can take a long time for healthy scales to grow back in. It does look like she has Scaly Leg Mites, but the one foot also looks like it's infected (raised/red swelling lump). It's hard to tell with the photos.

Soak in epsom salts, being careful, gently scrub to loosen mite debris and soften scales. Apply some Vetericyn or triple antibiotic ointment to the foot with the infection (swollen/red area). Then apply some A+D ointment, vaseline, coconut oil, etc. to the legs.

You may also want to consider getting some Tricide Neo to soak the foot/leg in to see if that helps with the infection. If that doesn't go down, then you may want to consult your vet for some antibiotics to treat her.

Keep her on clean, dry bedding. Offer her some poultry vitamins and extra protein like egg or tuna.
