I ordered 24 chicks 10 different breeds. All came in alive and active. Have heat plate for them. Gave probiotic and electrolytes in water and gave medicated crumble. Also had gro gel first 24hrs. Vaccinated for marek's. All seemed fine eating and drinking. Then first died next morning followed by one mid day. Gave them cooked mashed egg yolk. They ate up. Another following morning then another. Made it through one night with no death in morning thought it was over (4 dead) then after noon 2 died. No paste butt active eating drinking.Decided to loose the heat plate went to heat lamp to keep better eye on them. Noticed bubble watery poop with a little white to it. Saw chick die= lay down start breathing fast a few chirps then dead. I am so upset not sure how to help. Put ACV in water tonight. Can anyone tell me what they think it is and how to help it stop. Total now at 6 dead chicks.

Too many people over medicate there baby chicks. I'm probably about to get bombarded by city folks telling me I'm wrong . I have never lost a chick that was born healthy. I do not give chicks anything but water and chick starter period. I do not take chickens to the vet either. If they get sick or hurt I give them a shot of penicillin. If that don't fix em nothing will. Naturally chickens don't have access to vets or mediated feed and they have survived for thousands of years. Thats what works for me and if there's any old farmers on here, I bet you they do it just about the same way.

Welcome to BYC! It's great to have you. Sorry it's under such circumstances.

I wouldn't give ACV to such young chicks. It's a harsh substance for such little birds. And there's not even any real proof it's beneficial for adults. What kind of bedding are they on? Have you lost any since switching to a heat lamp? Certain heat plates may not provide quite enough heat.

With that many deaths my mind thinks MAYBE coccidiosis except I'd expect even more losses than that and lots of "sickly" birds, not just a few dropping dead while the rest appear healthy.

I also might think shipping stress... but that usually only affects birds in the first 1-2 days. The way you describe it, it's been what, 4 or 5 since you got them?

I got them Wednesday morning so 4 days. They are on pine shavings. I also thought cocci but I'm giving medicated food and they are eating a lot. Thought about nutra drench?

Hmm. Medicated feed is a great preventative, but cocci can get past it sometimes. I would give Corid a try - Cocci doesn't fit your situation perfectly but it's the closest thing I can think of, and treating with Corid cannot do any harm.

I would use NutriDrench in this case. It's a great supplement but only really useful in cases of things like great stress or vitamin deficiencies. And for general-purpose stress treatment I prefer electrolytes most of the time anyhow.

Thank you for the help really upset at loosing so many, never have I had this problem. I have to order the Corid it's getting hard to find with all our new regulations. It will take a couple days to get here. Hope I don't loose any more.

So very sorry with your losses, I wish I could tell you what is wrong. I just don't know.
