Topic of the Week - Feeding Treats

Hello.....

I am not a big treat giver to my Birds......With Chicks I wait till they are 3 weeks old...I feed medicated starter, a bowl of grit free choice and clear water at all times...:)

Treats I do toss to my Birds once a week is either 2 apples cut up, some scratch grains, squash, cucumber, or some thawed out peas....

Things I never feed is spinach, wild bird seed, sunflower seeds, yogurt, garlic, or ACV.....Bread also is never is given....;)

Cheers!
I feed my girls some bird seed daily. I needed to give it to my goose and then the girls just joined in. Is it bad for them? They seem fine. The LOVE it. I just scatter a scoop in their yard...

- At what age can you start offering chicks treats and how do you go about it? - I started at like 1 week, after the girls where on grit. They ate soft things like strawberries and boiled eggs.
- What treats do you give your flock? - Tomato, Cucumber, Strawberries, Soldier fly larvae, boiled/fried eggs (cooked eggs), corn.. those are the treats they get most often
- How much, and how often do you feed treats? - 2-4 times a week.
- What treats should NOT be given to chickens, or given in moderation? - Everything needs to be in moderation, I forget what they cannot have in particular, I always check before I give them something.
- What are your flock's favourite treats? - Soilder fly larvae, strawberries

My birds are fussy. They won't eat anything that is mushy, i.e. oatmeal, . The won't eat cucumbers, love watermelon, strawberry caps, blueberries ( not much of those, diarrhea bad). I give meal worms every day part of their diet. I also feed scratch daily albeit double in the cold weather. Always fresh water I'm on a well but have a water filtration system. I had high levels of arsenic and iron. I'm the only one here so there isn't much left overs. I do feed gizzard, livers, and hearts when I can get them at the grocery store and I will put out a rotisserie chicken when I'm done with it. I did give them some baked haddock the other night my eyes were bigger than my belly lol. They chowed down on that. I only give treats ( other than meal worms with feed) in the afternoon or evening so I know that have eaten their regular fare.

I give those soilder flies almost every day, along with corn. Its fatty and they've been loosing weight over the winter.

the tomatoes and cucumber where straight from the garden. They ate quite a lot of that. They go CRAZY for strawberries though. My mom brings the clippings from her work home every week or so.

I realize the following links are not .org or .edu! However, this is a good source for ALL the links in one place to the FDA testing & reports since the treat problems started in 2007, as well as government sources in other countries. All easy to access from one place...

Damn China for killing us and our pets.

How did you get your water tested? My birds love a chicken carcass too and they love grits and oatmeal. (Cooked)

It's just that wild bird seed is high in fat. Chickens don't need that. Fatty liver disease could be an issue.

Apple seeds are poison to chickens.

My girls LOVE homemade plain yogurt! Sometimes I add a few mealworms or dry oatmeal. Also, I grow fresh herbs in a big pot beside their run. They can munch on peppermint whenever they want.

I start at 4 weeks. I give them chick grit and start with mealworms. I move to fresh treats. Then scratch when they are at least 8 weeks old.
- What treats do you give your flock?
Fruit, mealworms, veggies, scratch, black oil sunflower seeds, live bugs, marigolds, yogurt, cottage cheese, worms, lizards and fish occasionally, grass (duh), and sand. (They think grit and oyster shell is sugar…)

Salty stuff, chocolate, apple seeds, toxic plants and foods.
