Hi there
Everytime i see my chicken she sits on a ball? It's a small plastic ball in her pen and she sits on it all day long .. i think even at night. I tried moving her to the other side of the pen but she keeps going back to the ball. I wonder if she might be broody? (woops i just noticed i wrote this post under the wrong topic pahaha)

Hi and welcome to BYC - thanks for joining us. I agree that she's broody and the link from redsoxs should help you out.

Best wishes

Your story reminded me of a member writing about her broody girl sitting on a bottle of Blu-Kote, lol.

Maybe you could find some fertile eggs for your girl?

Yes, she's broody. Poor thing she probably sees her friends with their hatchlings and wanted some of her own. Some broody hens will sit on nothing and protect it ferociously.

Welcome!

As you have already received some great advice to which I agree [broody] and a link to a good thread on breaking her if you want to, I will just wish you all the best.

I hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

If you would like to share more pictures and stories of your flock, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out

Thank you so much for all the sweet comments!! :D
Well I have been watching her for a few days now and I noticed she doesn't always sit on the ball, she also goes to sit in the henhouse sometimes... I took her outside her pen yesterday to wander around the garden, which she did, but as soon as she went back into the pen she went to sit on the ball again!
She also stopped laying eggs a long time ago (She's the oldest chicken I have) but she didn't look like she was broody to me.. I tried putting some golf balls in a box and then putting the box near her but she didn't even touch it.

I was planning to buy some new baby chicks this weekend and now i know my hen is broody so what do you guys think? Will she adopt baby chicks?:D

ps: I've read about broody hens and they say broody hens puff their feathers and 'growl' when you come near them but I can pet my chicken without any problem, she just stands/sits there, she isn't protective over the ball or something like that..

Update: I went to check on her and she was just sitting on the ground doing nothing, not running around like the other chickens.
I gave her something to eat and she just looked at me really weird but eventually she started to eat (really slowly). Does this have anything to do with being broody?
